FAQs
This FAQ gives short answers and links to the full guides. If something is broken, start with the Troubleshooting guide.
How do I download Codex?
Go to codexeditor.app and choose your operating system. See Download Codex.
How do I create an account?
Open Codex, choose the registration option, enter a username, email address, and password, then click Register. Passwords must be at least 15 characters and should not contain parts of your username or email. See Initial Setup.
Do I need to be online?
You need internet for first launch extension setup, login, project downloads, sync, AI, and new extension version pins. Local editing can continue offline after the project is available on your device.
Where do I get help?
Use the Troubleshooting guide first so you can collect useful details. If you still need help, post the generated details in Discord.
How do I create a project?
From the startup screen, click Create New Project, enter the project name, choose source and target languages, then import source files. See Creating a Project.
How do I open a shared project?
Sign in with the invited email address, check Online Only if the project is not local, then click Download. See Opening and Closing Projects.
What file formats can I import?
Codex supports source and target imports for formats such as DOCX, Markdown, subtitles, audio, TMS files, IDML, USFM, Paratext, eBible, Macula Bible, OBS, Biblica notes, and spreadsheet workflows. See Importing Files.
What is the difference between Source Files and Target Files?
Source Files are original content you want to translate. Target Files are existing translations you want Codex to align to source files already in the project.
How do I save a backup?
Use the project card's ZIP (with git) or Mini ZIP action, or follow Backup Your Project.
How does AI translation work?
Codex uses the project system message, source and target languages, project context, and your edits to generate suggestions. See AI Settings.
What is batch translation?
Autocomplete Chapter queues AI suggestions for multiple cells. Review every result before validation. See Batch Translation.
What is backtranslation?
Backtranslation translates your target text back toward the source language for review. Use the Source tab's Backtranslation section and Generate Backtranslation. See Translation Tools.
How do validations work?
Validation circles mark reviewed text or audio. Coordinators set required text and audio validation counts in the Main Menu. See Translation Tools.
How do I share a project?
Use Publish to Cloud from the Main Menu, then manage team access. See Sharing and Managing Projects.
Why do I see Update required?
A coordinator or project state requires you to update before opening. Use the project-card Update or Update Project action. See Opening and Closing Projects.
Can I work offline?
Yes, if the project is already local. Use Open Offline when needed. Sync and AI resume when you reconnect.
What are extension pins?
Some team projects require specific extension versions. Codex manages those versions with project profiles. See Update Codex and Extensions.
What can Codex export?
Codex exports plaintext, HTML, USFM, XLIFF, round-trip formats, subtitles, CSV/TSV, backtranslations, and audio options. See Exporting Projects.
Why is media not available offline?
Your project may use Stream Only or may not have cached the media yet. See Media and Storage.
How do I check my version?
Use Help > About Codex on Windows/Linux or Codex > About Codex on macOS for the app version. Use the Extensions panel only when support needs the extension version. See Update Codex and Extensions.
How do I report a bug?
Collect the app version, project name, exact steps, screenshots if useful, and console errors when available. See Reporting Bugs.
